The Relaxed Soul on The Value of Awareness
By Dr Paul Haider
A man sits in prison for killing a man, disconnected from his feelings because his mother left him when he was only 8 years old… just dropped him off in front of a store.
Later he became a man filled with rage, sweeping away other emotions because it was too painful to connect to his feelings. Until one day in prison the warden decided to teach meditation to the inmates, for 10 days he sat in silence meditating 4 to 6 hours everyday… it was difficult to say the least. But at the end of this experience he started connecting with his pain… pain that needed to come out so he could find peace.
Meditating for hours on his breath… he became aware of sensations, feelings, and everything else by naming what was happening. “I have a sensation of tension in my neck, anger in my chest, anxiety in my gut, and more.” Just naming what was happening and becoming aware instead of numb.
Finally he cried, then cried some more, getting in touch with his feelings, but not acting on his feelings… just being aware of them. Now when a feeling comes up, he connects to that feeling but can choose to act on it or not… thus his rage is going away.
For this man it’s a life long process of learning to forgive himself… becoming totally aware of his feelings.
It’s amazing what a little bit of meditative silence will do to find the Divine within.
