How I Found Reiki, or…
…How Did a Left-Brained Engineer End Up In A Place Like This???
by Christopher Buck
Several years ago, a good friend of mine decided that she wanted a change in careers and because of an affinity for healing, chose Massage Therapy. They had been studying energy therapy in her school that week and when I arrived at her house to pick her up for dinner, she told me she wanted to show me something really cool that she had learned.
Being your typical analytical male engineer, I really didn’t have much use for any left-coast new-age touchy-feely stuff, but when a pretty girl says to hop up on the massage table, you obey with alacrity. I was feeling rather smug and grinning like the Cheshire Cat over my good fortune, when she pulled out this pendulum. Plastering my smile in place and trying not to roll my eyes, I thought to myself, “The things a guy will do for a pretty girl.”
She then proceeded to hold the pendulum over what she said was my sacral chakra. (Another internal eye roll.) Nothing happened. (Well, of course not!) Frowning, she then proceeded to a different chakra where she intensely studied the pendulum for movement. Nothing. Mumbling to herself, she moved the pendulum up and down my body until finally, exasperated, she said, “You are so blocked!”
(Well, duh…..I am a guy!)
So with a valiant effort on my part to appear both interested and sensitive, I suggested that she let me try it. She hopped up on the table, pointed out the location of her sacral chakra, and told me how to hold the pendulum over the top of it. So I did.
AND DAMNED IF THE PENDULUM DIDN’T START SPINNING IN A TWO INCH DIAMETER COUNTERCLOCKWISE CIRCLE!!!!!!
This was not right! Moreover it was not possible. So I stopped the pendulum, braced my arm, held my breath and let it loose.
AND DAMNED IF THE PENDULUM DIDN’T START SPINNING IN A TWO INCH DIAMETER COUNTERCLOCKWISE CIRCLE!!!!!!
I would move it off the chakra and it would stop. I would move it back on and it would start. I took the pendulum up and down her body and on every chakra, there was movement. None were as dramatic as the sacral, but….the pendulum reacted to each. She finally had to take the pendulum away because I had completely lost track of time and she was getting really hungry.
As I walked out her door, I could distinctly feel the safe reality of the universe I knew and understood begin to wobble.
I couldn’t get enough of energy therapy. I had to understand that there was science behind what I had witnessed. I poured over research studies and books (Energy Medicine, The Scientific Basis by James L. Oshman is very informative). I took an Usui Reiki class with her. When she discovered a Reiki Jin Kei Do class, I tried that. I have come to believe that all the Energy Therapy modalities work with the same energy – it is just the path you feel most comfortable traveling.
For me, Reiki Jin Kei Do became the Path and it has changed my life. Little by little I have learned to not think so hard and to trust my feelings – a very difficult transition for an up-tight, left-brained male engineer. I have learned to feel the energy that flows though, around and between us. I still have a long way to travel, but I am on the path I need to be.
Thank you, my dear friend, for rocking my world!
