Religion requires belief. Spirituality is about understanding, or at least it should be. The moment it requires a belief it lapses back into murky religious waters. Belief allows intellectual/spiritual growth to stop at a certain point. Easy answers allow you to stop thinking and growing, it’s a crutch that stunts development. It might be necessary at first but it is counterproductive to growth and understanding. Understanding also removes the necessity of belief, as if you understand something you no longer have to make up a belief about it, and it is quite difficult to allow yourself to. From a purely scientific perspective, this woman saying alcohol has negative effects on the body and perception is not false. Where she loses you is when she ventures into metaphysical explanations, but really she is just explaining the same thing again at a different level. It’s a level you might scoff at, but it doesn’t invalidate the point she’s making, and in essence it’s just a different way of saying the same thing a doctor would about the effects of alcohol. It’s also again, not a belief. It’s her understanding of the effects of alcohol and drugs. You can argue that her understanding is insane, has no basis in reality, but reality is individual perception and this her understanding she’s come to based on her own perception of existence. Slightly different than the blind faith repetition of a belief fed to her by society, a pastor, a book etc.
